The Dragon with a Big Nose
Although this is her first single poet collection, the name Kathy Henderson is very well known already from The Boat which won the Kurt Maschler Award and was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize and The Storm which was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. This is a very intelligent and witty collection of poems, full of acute observation, clever word play and imaginative images. All the poems are set in the city and they are uniquely challenging in the way they ask the reader to look at objects as obvious as a crane or a bus or the kerbside, as well as some very sparky poems about people and animals. This anthology should be in every inner city school library!
